Tales From Home:Building Literacy and Identity Through Storytelling for Pre-k -1st Grade

The Story Box is a 5-day early literacy mini-unit designed to celebrate the power of storytelling, identity, and family traditions. Centered around an original leveled reader titled The Story Box, this unit introduces students to the idea that everyday objects—like a scarf, a photo, or a flower—can hold personal and cultural stories. The unit culminates in a Story Box Project, where students create and present their own story boxes filled with items that are special to them. This not only reinforces literacy skills, but also fosters confidence, self-expression, and cultural pride.
